As you walk through the halls of McDaniel, you might see a group of students kicking around a small, colorful bag in the courtyard or outside during lunch. That’s Sack Attack, McDaniel’s hacky sack club. Whether they’re outside in the sun or playing in the halls before class, the club has created a community centered around hacky sack and hanging out with friends.
Seniors Connor Dougherty, Luca Nusbaum and Lupine Reeves started Sack Attack this year after realizing how many people at McDaniel already enjoyed playing together.
“We just love the game and the community that it builds,” Nusbaum said.
According to Nusbaum, hacky sack brings “love and positivity” to the school. He said he started playing around three years ago and has enjoyed seeing more people join in over time.
“It’s always been great to be able to show new people the game, like underclassmen that are interested,” Nusbaum adds.
He learned Hacky Sack from his older brother and continues to motivate other students to join.
The club meets every Tuesday during lunch in club advisor Kevin Heeney’s room, either room 187 or 287. During meetings, students spend time talking, eating lunch, and, of course, playing hacky sack together.
“It varies from day to day, but on average, we have around 15 people per meeting,” Reeves said. “There are about 50 people in the club.”
Reeves said his favorite part of Sack Attack is being able to spend time with other students while playing.
“I like being able to hang out and have fun sacking after or while eating lunch,” Reeves said.
For many members, the club is not only about hacky sack, but also about the friendships and community that come with it.
“My favorite thing about Sack Attack is that it’s similar to soccer, which I love,” club member Blake Rhodes said. “It’s fun with friends, and you can do it anywhere.”
Sack Attack has quickly become a recognizable part of student life at McDaniel. Whether students are experienced players or just learning how to kick the sack for the first time, the club gives people a place to relax, meet others, and have fun during the school day.
