“I love froyo, oh, oh, oh-oh / It’s so yolo, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, /Frozen yogurt is my favorite treat, / Sweet and yummy, froyo’s all I eat,” are the relatable lyrics of the character Liv Rooney, in season 1, episode 20, her song all about the dessert airs on TV, in the 2010s phenomenon Liv and Maddie.
Frozen yogurt is indeed all I eat when I’m at school and in need of a quick sugar fix. So I figured I’d review our very own McDaniel student store’s freshly made froyo, determining if it’s sweet, yummy, and worth your money.
For just three dollars, I have bought the chilled treat over and over this year, along with many students who have tried the product at least once in the past. It’s a great way to boost mood with a tart sugary treat!
It’s no Menchie’s; however, the selection of rotating flavors definitely gives the dessert an edge compared to other products at our own store. What I’d love to see from the student store to make it worth the extra mile, is all in the look.
I tend to enjoy my food a little more when the presentation is done tastefully, toppings and a perfect swirl makes a mile difference. Kit-kat crumbled on some chocolate froyo puts me in better spirits than even an energy drink that practically chemically boosts my mood. I understand that this can be tricky as there’s long lines during the lunch rush, but a humble suggestion of mine is to step it up a little. Adding flare only makes it more appetizing. Regardless, I’ll still buy it, still decent even when it’s half melted.
Personally, I’m not plain vanilla’s biggest fan; really, it’s just so boring and bland. Instead, I always end up waiting for the raspberry–or the pineapple Dole Whip that they had at the beginning of the year. I’ll end up getting the vanilla and chocolate swirl if I’m really desperate, instead of just one or the other.
There are times when I feel the soft serve leaves a bit to be desired. First things first, the texture is not great. When I take a bite of froyo, I expect creamy, rich, smooth, and instead, I’m met with this almost granular taste, like protein powder. I’ve also heard complaints of it being either “too sweet and artificial” or “not sweet enough”, although how could it be, it’s not ice cream.
Not much can be done to change this, considering the store’s strict model of diet and health, so maybe I’ll reach for the store’s new popsicles, which are cheaper than the froyo and come in a wide range of fruity flavors like pineapple and mango, just in time for summer.
