She Wants Revenge is, in my opinion, a one-of-a-kind band. Combining elements of dark wave, gothic rock, electronic, and post-punk with a trip-hop influence. This band has definitely created a sound of their own, and they completely shine at it. The tone their songs follow is a beautiful combination of yearning, mystery, and sensuality. Every song I listen to feels like I’m being seduced into listening more. This was highlighted by their EP Up And Down, with songs like “Your Love” and “A Little Bit Harder Now.” I’ve known about She Wants Revenge from a very young age, and they still satisfy this insatiable itch with their sound produced; the primarily electronic instrumentations, specifically the use of keyboards, are so well utilized it completely encapsulates me in each and every song.
They recently released an anniversary for their self-titled album She Wants Revenge. The sound of the songs within the album is the same. However, they added a total of twelve new songs, in addition to the original fourteen. It brings the runtime up to a shocking total of two hours and six minutes, which is an absurdly long length for an album. Despite this unusually long runtime, I enjoyed every second this album had to offer. Tracks that stood out to me specifically would have to be: “Sarah Says,” “Out Of Control – SWR Remix,” and “Broken Promises For A Broken Heart.”
These new songs expand upon their original work to such a great extent, whether it be demos, instrumentation, remixes, or new songs entirely. Each song is made to follow one purpose, and that purpose is to be as captivating and sultry as it possibly can be. They accomplish this with a mix of deep, scornful love songs followed by lyrics that scream utter infatuation, demanding and explicit with how the lead vocalist sings the lyrics, shown in the song, “Break Your Heart ” with lines such as“Tonight I’ll kiss you on the mouth and pledge my love to you,” showing how desperate the love for this person is. Another example in the song “Spend The Night” showcases these themes greatly with the following lines, “Why can’t I just spend the night? It’s cold outside, and there’s no place else I can go, and it feels so right.” The tempo of the song makes it hard not to feel the lyrics for what they’re trying to accomplish. The way the song is composed in that it makes it hard not to follow with some sort of movement as each note passes.
Though a long listen, I thoroughly enjoyed what this album had to offer. Overall, I’d give it an 8.5/10. She Wants Revenge definitely has their own vibe, so I encourage you to check them out on Spotify, Apple Music, or whatever streaming platform you use. Some of my personal favorite songs that I’d recommend if you enjoy the sound would have to be, “A Little Bit Harder Now,” “Kiss Me,” and “All Wound Up.” For fans of Portishead and Massive Attack, you’ll enjoy this band a lot. They have a similar sound, while also staying in a lane of their own, which I think everyone should appreciate.
