There’s been a lot of trial and error for me during my time in school. Apart from writing, I never found anything that interested me enough for me to pursue—although I am a good writer I’d never want to pursue it as a career, I’d like to keep it a hobby because I don’t want that spark to die off.
I joined the journalism pathway my junior year, and I wish I had done it sooner. The community established was greater than any other class of mine had done; even if intro to journalism wasn’t necessarily my most favorite class, I always looked forward to going.
Going into my senior year I hadn’t forecasted for Newspaper because of the bad taste Intro left in my mouth, but with SB’s recruitment, I switched my 8th period going into the second semester, which I’m completely glad I did. The switch in class atmospheres for me was so drastic it honestly took me by surprise. It was the same as Intro but even more warming.
Writing reviews has always been something I enjoyed, even if I couldn’t do what I wanted because of relevancy. Nonetheless, it was an extremely fun experience. I haven’t been in the class for that long, considering I joined a little after the second semester had started, but I do have to say I joined at a very convenient time. The first day I was in the class it was release day so I got donuts, which was excellent timing.
Getting my first story through was such a pain. Coming from Intro where I could write about whatever I wanted and relevancy didn’t matter, but in newspaper it had to be within 1-2 months of recency. Once I finally was able to get my first story going I had a complete blast. Writing about things I enjoy and being able to spread the media around the school is awesome. In the end I enjoyed the four months I got to spend with the program. I do wish I would’ve joined earlier, so I could fully resonate with the program and sink in with the community to a greater extent.
