This year senior reps Benny Wilson and Santana Apodaca have been working to create new ways to support the student body and their needs. One of the newest creations is the B.S. box.
The B.S. box is located in the front office, right on the front desk. It is a black box with the letters “B.S.” written on it. There are slips of paper next to it for students to write any concerns or changes they want to see happen in the school.
Leadership adviser Natalie Gardner explained that it is part of the student council’s goals for the whole year.
“In general our student council goal is to represent the student body, and so it is a way to hear from students,” Gardner mentioned. “The idea is that it is a feedback opportunity for them as co-presidents to hear from their constituents, from other people and hopefully make some positive changes.”
The B.S. Box is one of the steps they’ve taken to achieve that goal.
“They had [the box] made by construction students here at school and painted it themselves, so it’s very DIY,” Gardner said.
Wilson also talked about the creation of the box and the meaning of its name.
“B.S. was our initials, and we knew we wanted to do something that would interact with the student body,” Wilson said.
The B.S box is a way for students to directly connect with the student body.
“Students can anonymously put paper slips of ideas, comments, questions, concerns and give any feedback for me and Santana to help better represent them,” Wilson added.
Speaking to the student body and speaking on behalf of their needs was essential to their campaign.
“We really wanted a part of our campaign to be listening to what the student body wants,” Wilson voiced.
Wilson spoke about some of the submissions that are already being made to the B.S. box.
“Some of them are pretty simple, like requesting to be followed from the McDaniel leadership account,” Wilson said. “Some others are just out of our jurisdiction. We have some power but not enough to where we can make huge crazy changes within the school.”
Apodaca mentioned their overarching goals as senior reps in an Oracle story last year about new student representatives.
“We want to make a difference that lasts and can be seen for generations to come here at McDaniel,” Apodaca remarked.
Elijah Trent, a senior in Leadership, mentioned more about the student council’s main objectives. Trent shared how the student council aims to hear what the students need and how the council can help.
Listening to the student body is an ongoing goal for leadership and student council.
The B.S. box was created in light of their goals of voicing the student body’s needs and their hope as senior presidents to work towards changes that can be seen for many years at the school.
