After placing third last year in districts, the wrestling team is looking to continue their success in the PIL this season.
“I think this year we have a really good chance of winning district,” wrestling coach Cale Holt said.
The team is also hoping to have some of their wrestlers place at state. One of those wrestlers is sophomore Isaiah Synder.
“My goal this year is to be a state champ of the 120lb weight class and improve myself,” Snyder said. The wrestling program has a deep roster this year with 50 total boys and 10 girls on the team. With these numbers, they are hoping that three to four people from each weight class can place at districts.
“We have had a lot more wrestlers come in throughout the years, three years ago we only had about 15 kids on the team and now the whole room is filled out,” junior Ethan Holstein said.
Staying injury-free is very important to have a good season.
“Injuries are always part of the issue, but that is why we are building a deep roster,” Holt stated.
Another obstacle for most wrestlers is trying to maintain their weight during the season.
According to Snyder, a struggle will be keeping his weight down so he can wrestle at his preferred weight class.
The wrestling team has been working on their craft during the off-season. The team had wrestlers compete in a Greco tournament which is a yearly wrestling tournament during the summer. Many also came in for improvement during the pre-season practices.
“We have improved in the areas of growing the team, leadership, and overall we’ve just just improve in every face,” Coach Romelio Salas said.
It’s very important for teams to have a tight bond to succeed, and the wrestling team is no exception.
“The practices have helped us bond a lot,” Synder said. “We are like a family now.”
Some wrestlers to look out for this season are Ethan Holstein, Isaiah Synder, Ameil Keys, Elena Brown, Anika Schramm, and Sidrah Schramm.
The wrestling team is laser focusing on winning districts this year, and it’s looking like they have a good shot.
