Weapons, some are saying it’s the horror movie of the year and I would have to agree. It is written, produced, and co-scored by Zach Cregger and stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, James Anthony, Amy Madigan and many others. This movie was inspired by Cregger’s real-life grief, surrounding cases of missing children, unlike his movie Barbarian (2022), which was based on a fictional book he read.
Before I state my personal opinion, here’s a quick overview. The movie takes place starting on a Wednesday and at exactly 2:17a.m, 17 children get out of their beds, walk out the door, and start running with their arms extended outwards into the darkness. Weirdly, all the kids were from one class, Justine Gandy’s class, to be specific. Except for one kid, Alex. Alex was the only one of his third-grade classmates to remain at home the night the other 17 children vanished from the town of Maybrook. Soon enough, Justine becomes under suspicion of all the missing children from upset parents. There’s one specific parent who eventually takes charge of finding the children, as well as Justine, who tries finding them herself. One night, Justine goes to Alex’s house to see why he was the only one left, but comes to find out all of the windows are covered in newspaper, and eventually sees his parents sitting on the couch with a blank stare. Soon enough, they want to interview the parents. But Alex’s aunt shows up. She has an “interesting look”, in my opinion. Little does everyone know she is behind it all. She’s possessing his parents and all of the children in her basement. It has many twists and turns, and I think that is why it is so good.
This has become one of my top ten favorite movies. From how Cregger portrays everyone’s view in the movie and perspectives, to the great cast and acting, really makes it a must see for this spooky season. I watched the movie again with some friends, this time not in the movie theater, just at home. I noticed how the director added some aspects of comedy and made some stuff funny. I noted some little things about the characters. There’s also some deeper meanings that I noticed as the movie went on, “easter eggs” you could say, that showed up further into the movie, and that was important in the long run. Over all, this movie was the perfect amount of comedy, horror and possession. The movie was a perfect watch in and out of the movie theater, and I definitely recommend it for a movie night!
