The 2025 Oscars happened recently and had the internet–mainly Tik-Tok–in an uproar with clips of the event. I’m here again, last seen covering the Grammys, and now the Oscars, to tell you what was a bop or flop in my opinion.
Floppy bop: Best actor and actress awards–The Brutalist, Anora, their competitors
Adrien Brody won best actor for The Brutalist, Brody’s actual performance was very good, and I quite enjoyed The Brutalist, but the choice has definitely sparked conversations all over the internet. The film had used generative artificial intelligence to make actors’ accents more “authentic,” yikes, so it feels as though it was a horrible choice on the academy’s part because that publicity is not positive as there is a lot of criticism of AI in the artistic or rather film industry.
Sebastian Stan should’ve won for his performance in The Apprentice as Donald Trump. Personally, I feel as though Stan should’ve won for the scrutiny he got for the part in general, whether that was best actor or the film being recognized as a whole. There’s a lot of hate towards Trump right now that was not direct but implied in victory speeches. So it’s a deep confusion to me why he didn’t.
Mikey Madison won best actress for her role in Anora. The movie itself won five other awards, taking home the most of all the films nominated. I’m very glad that she won for Anora, as it was a compelling movie to me. It was the lesser expectation for her to win that in my opinion, and it seems like people online agree with me as well.
Many people wanted Wicked to win EVERYTHING it was nominated for, but I think if I wanted to watch Ariana Grande act, I’d go back to Sam & Cat. There’s a role she should win more for.
Half & half, bop & flop: Red carpet fashion nightmares and daydreams
God this was a nightmare. It usually is, but it was even worse than usual. Not to hate on Wicked again, but to also hate on Wicked again. I’m wondering if green is now Cynthia Erivo’s whole personality? Her red carpet dress which I’m not sure was even a dress, let alone what it was….looks…like…something? Nothing? I can’t tell. For a bit of consensus I will admit that Grande’s ‘shoe’ dress was a captive way to show-off her support for the movie. I loved the reference to the heels of the original Oz movie way better then the pink she usually takes on.
Overall though, a major flop.
Major bop however would be Anok Yai, shocking us again with her beauty. As last time striking with her blue mesh dress at the Met Gala, now with a rose-gold dress and black feather boa at the Oscars. She is so gorgeous! I’ve loved her modeling, and genuinely she just rocked fashion at these events, she’s less a participant in the film or awards part, but she should get an award. I’m looking forward to seeing her continue to surprise me–and the internet–with her awe-striking fashion choices.
Bop: Presentation can be awful but this one wasn’t
Conan O’Brien did a wonderful job presenting. He even cracked a Kendrick Lamar joke that had the internet in an uproar and quickly became an opener to many Lamar TikTok and Instagram edits I’ve seen online.
Not to mention his social media presence regarding the Oscars was rather “cute.” Having posted him laying on top of the red carpet and helping roll it out. Other presenters such as Harrison Ford and Anthony Mackey sent many clips through the internet pocket. Definitely a bop.
Overall The Oscars was a bop, so let us roll up the carpet and try to ignore the horrendous flops…or not.
