\Established in 1954, Clyde’s Prime Rib is one of the oldest restaurants in Portland and has always been a community favorite. To this day, if you drive by around 6 p.m. in the evening, you will see a full parking lot and cars lining the streets of Sandy.
Clyde’s was originally a Black-owned business, which was a rare thing in Portland at the time. In 2015, a man named Alex Bond bought it from the original owner, Eddie Mays. Bond continues to keep the history of the spot alive with the decor they use and the Black musicians they showcase.
The outside of the building looks to be made out of stones in a castle-like formation, which is very eye-catching, especially since it’s topped with a bright red sign. When you walk inside, it’s pretty dark, which just adds to the ambience, some might say. There are chandeliers hanging from the ceilings draping over your head. The dark walls and bright red booths make you feel as though you are in a different era. Old pictures on the walls showcase the history of the restaurant and the importance of the Black history surrounding the establishment.
The music is trendy, somewhat fitting the vibe of the place, and plays quietly all night. You can hear chatting from older couples, families and people visiting from afar.
The food is a good price for being a super nice place. I would recommend going during their happy hour which is every day from 3 to 6 p.m. because of the really affordable prices.
The menu is filled with some diverse options, from ahi poke bowls to a fried chicken sandwich. I decided to order the crispy hot wings. As someone who isn’t great with spice, this was definitely an interesting choice, but I really liked them. The batter lives up to its name because it’s definitely crunchy.
I wouldn’t say the wings are particularly spicy, but they have that heated taste to them. The wings are a dry rub and the chicken is quite fatty, which I’m usually not into, but the taste was so good and strong that I was able to power through easily. The taste reminds me a bit of Cajun, but there’s another flavor in there I can’t pinpoint. It’s slightly zesty.
My parents got the prime rib bites, and it looked filling. I didn’t try them, but they said it was really delicious.
The staff are super nice and do their job well. I felt super comfortable ordering or asking for help whether it was a refill or napkins because I spilt something.
Not only is the food and interior design of this place amazing, but so is the live music that gets played there on this little vintage stage in another section of the restaurant. It is incredible. Everyone is feeling themselves and dancing to it. It really brings the community together with strangers dancing amongst each other. They host it every single night. What I loved was watching the different generations dancing together along with people from different backgrounds. This restaurant is full of diversity, and it creates a great environment.
If I could, I would go to Clyde’s at least a couple times a week because it’s just so fun! Everyone is having a great time and eating some great food. I would highly recommend coming here for yourself. This is a great place to bring visiting friends and family who need to see what Portland is about.
