The girl’s basketball season is in progress, and the team has a renewed look with a new coach and some new talented players coming into the program.
“The freshmen are really great to have this year on varsity,” junior Izzy Hale said.
Over the off-season, the team has been devoted to working on their craft. Practice during these workouts is a crucial part of their strategy for having success during the regular season.
“In our off-season workouts we worked on a lot of shooting, defensive placements, and working on pick and roll, which is going to be a big part of our offense this year,” head coach Ruby Buckley said.
Over the offseason, the team has grown a lot mentally too. This has been a focus for the team because it contributes to the team’s chemistry.
“Mentally the team has improved a lot over the off-season. There was a lack of confidence, but now the team is learning to give each other confidence. Last year they didn’t really talk to each other, but this year you can tell from day one they’re all talking to each other and hanging out,” Buckley said.
According to Buckley, the team’s main focus this year is playing team defense, and on the offensive side of the ball, they want to focus on learning each other’s strengths, so the team can play together more cohesively as a unit.
After beating Roosevelt both times last year in their matchup, the team is looking to do it again this year. They are also set on beating Grant this year.
“Roosevelt is definitely one. We should come away with two wins this year, and also, this year, we can give Grant a run for their money in both halves and beat them,” Buckley said.
Junior Mila Gomes also has some personal goals for herself. this year, Gomes is looking to become a leader for the team.
“My goals this year are to encourage my teammates from a leadership position and help the team improve,” Gomes said. “Another goal of mine is to get better every day and work on my weaknesses.”
According to Buckley, the team has several crucial players who will heavily contribute to its success. The team has a wide array of quality players who will help drive the team to success.
“First of all Fiona Lillard, who is a sophomore this year, who hopefully has a breakout season. She’s naturally like a Kevin Durant on the court,” Buckley said.
Buckley also spoke about the senior leadership class this year.
“I like our seniors. They are really devoted this year. Anna Gladwin and Princess Fletcher are really devoted to making sure they push the team during practices,” Buckley said.
The girls’ basketball team is ready to get their season rolling. Come to their game on Friday, Jan. 10 against Cleveland.
