The freshman team soccer team (JV2) has finished their season undefeated. Earlier in the season, the team faced some competitive teams yet still came out victorious.
“Coming into the season, I thought we were an underdog team. Grant was one of the bigger teams we’ve played this year, and so was Jesuit. So winning against one of them and tying the other one is big,” team captain Linus Buerkle said.
The team put in a lot of hard work including multiple drills and team conditioning to have an undefeated season like this one, while also being able to develop the future of the program According to Ferguson.
“It feels great to be undefeated,” head coach Joe Ferguson said. “The most important thing for me is that we are developing young student-athletes. The wins are what happens when we work hard.”
Ferguson also mentioned some of the preparations the team took during the offseason to achieve this monumental success.
“Our team has a great work ethic, they wanna win, they wanna work hard, they wanna improve. Some of the outstanding players on this team really bring the level up for everyone, and that’s really nice to see that they wanna work together as a team and win together,” Ferguson said.
A crucial part of the team’s success this year has been the leadership, accordin
g to captain Willy Gaebe. He spoke about what he does as a captain to ensure success within the team.
“It’s about encouraging people, and building them up, and knowing how we can make the team improve,” Gaebe said.
According to Buerkle, being a role model and leading by example is major part of being a captain.
While winning games is important for the team, they also have academic goals they want to fulfill.
“I wanna make sure we finish the season strong. We want to continue to keep winning games, but most importantly, I want them to get all A’s in their classes,” Ferguson said. “I want them to get good grades because whether they play soccer in college, or professionally, it’s the classwork that’s really gonna be the important part of their future.”
With the team’s victory-filled season, there have been players who have begun to flourish into well-rounded athletes who can help lead the program to success, according to Ferguson.
“Some of the key players this season have been our captains Simon Reynolds, who swung up to JV. We’ve got Linus Buerkle, we got Cylas Ostrand, those guys have been the backbone and the leadership component of this team, and it’s been really nice to have strong leaders to make sure the level always stays up,” Said ferguson.
The team’s work ethic shows a promising future for the program.
