Dr. Frankenstein and his monster are characters that have been synonymous with Halloween for hundreds of years. Unfortunately however, the monster’s bride has largely been relegated to lackluster couples costumes despite her lovable character.
This Halloween, I urge anyone who has or hasn’t already seen the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein to give it a watch; it’s the perfect movie to get you in that creepy mood.
Bride of Frankenstein has a lot going for it film-wise. It’s well written, thrilling, and funny at times. Although, my favorite quality about the movie is its overall charm. The black and white, the old-timey dialogue, and the over the top acting. All of it bleeds together and becomes this beautiful amalgamation of emotion and action, much like the bride herself. While watching it, I could really see why so many other artists have been inspired by it.
Obviously, one of the most standout characters is the titular bride. Spoiler warning for those who really need it: but she has a very short amount of time on screen, only showing up in full at the last five minutes. Nevertheless, she does a lot for the film. Seeing her stand up after being brought to life and getting to witness that iconic hair and robe, I was just in awe. It felt so magical to watch something so influential just casually on my screen. I can’t imagine how wowed people in the 30’s must’ve felt seeing her, not knowing anything about her, how famous she would be, the stories she would spark to life. It definitely made me appreciate the whole experience a lot more, even if she only guest starred at the end.
My descriptions of any part of this movie won’t do it justice. I really just urge everyone to watch and love it for themselves. It’s sweet, it’s got a great story, it’s not your usual gorefest horror film, it’s something so much more. And I really do hope everyone reading this gets the chance to experience this bewitching piece of movie history, whether it be this Halloween, or any day of the year.
