As I walked through the door of Mikiko Mochi Donuts, I was pleasantly surprised by the comforting space of the shop. Inside there were pretty pastel colors painted all around the walls such as pink, purple and green. The light piano music playing in the background made everything feel more fancy.
Mikiko Mochi Donuts, located at 300 NE 28th Ave., has drawn attention for their mochi-inspired donuts. Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made out of glutinous steamed rice pounded into a paste and molded into a shape. Mikiko Mochi Donuts incorporates the unique texture of mochi into their donuts, which are also gluten and dairy-free. As someone who loves mochi and likes donuts, I was excited to try this place out. After waiting in line to order, I ended up getting three donuts.
They had very interesting flavors, from peach balsamic to root beer float. I hadn’t seen a donut place with such flavors before. The donut flavors that I decided to get were passionfruit curd, honeydew melon boba and a normal one without any glaze to get a taste of just the donut without toppings.
The first donut I tried was the plain one. I wanted to know how the base of all Mikiko’s donuts tasted. With the first bite, I immediately started to taste the mochi flavor. The texture of the donut felt both dense and airy, an interesting feeling that I enjoyed. Overall, even though this donut was plain, it tasted really flavorful.
The next donut that I tried was the honeydew melon boba donut. It came with two pieces of melon flavored mochi on top, which tasted nice. This donut’s glaze flavor felt very complex and impossible to explain. I tasted undertones of melon and for the most part a flavor I had never experienced before. The glaze was so strong to the point where I couldn’t taste the mochi batter anymore. This donut flavor wasn’t my favorite and I wouldn’t get it again, but if you’re someone who wants to try something unique and different, this one’s for you.
The last donut that I tried was the passionfruit curd donut, which definitely stood out to me the most. The passionfruit curd filled in the middle had a perfect amount of tartness that passionfruit has and the just right amount of sweetness so that it’s not overly tart. I also enjoyed the passionfruit glaze they added on top. The dough of the donut also did not take away from any of the other flavors. Everything paired really well together. I’d definitely recommend this donut!
Pricing depends on which type of donut you get. Filled donuts are $3.75, while classic donuts are $3.25. I would say pricing is more on the expensive side for the amount of product that you get because the donuts are really small.
Another thing that added to my experience was the kind staff. They were very positive and showed that they care about their customers by asking how people’s days were going and making sure customers were satisfied with the products.
If you’re someone who is willing to spend money, wants to try unique flavors and maybe is gluten free or dairy-free, I would recommend this place.
