This year the cross country team looks to set PRs and continue to improve their team. There are many things the team worked to build on during the offseason.
According to head coach Duy Bui, they improved a lot through workouts.
“They actually gained more independence this year,” Bui said.
Varsity boys captain Josh Hepner took the role of leading a lot of the summer workouts. This is his third year running cross country, and he has some goals for this season.
“I hope to make it to state this year and possibly get a scholarship,” Hepner said.
Both Bui and Hepner mentioned how their team has grown. This is the first year that they have had a full girls team.
“There have been struggles with the team including a few injuries,” Bui said. “These athletes are putting thirty plus hours a week, and slowly when you run more, your body is going to get burnt out.”
Bui also has goals for his team.
“The best scenario is that the athletes learn to take care of their bodies,” he said.
Bui also hopes for improvement.
“We are at rock bottom, so there is nowhere to go but up,” Bui said, referencing their status in the league.
He hopes that they do better at districts, where they weren’t at the top of their game last year.
Berlin Herrera, a varsity girls runner, talked about how their team has developed over time.
“As a team, we continue to improve overall,” Herrera said.
She also hopes to break 20:30 in the 5k by the end of the season.
As the season kicks into gear, Herrera and the rest of the team hope to hit the ground running.
