Family forced to evacuate home after wildfire comes too close

Freshman Sorin Gomes, a 15-year-old student who goes to Benson High School, spoke about how him and his family had to evacuate their home.

“We couldn’t spend anytime outside, and when we were walking the dogs, we couldn’t see more than 20 feet in front of us,” Gomes said.

Also he was worried that the fire would spread towards their house.

Gomes had to leave his home during the fire and smoke, so his family packed up a few things that could not be replaced.

“My family went to our grandparent’s house. It took a few hours to get there, but it was nice being out of the house even though we had to evacuate,” Gomes said.

It took their family about three hours to get the things they needed and wanted, such as some snacks for the ride, some water to stay hydrated, some mask to cover their faces.

“It made me nervous because you never know how fast it will spread,” Gomes said.
